From Dating to Parenthood: Director Unveils Plans for '10 Things' Film Trilogy and Broadway Show

Director Gil Junger is bringing 10 Things I Hate About You back into the spotlight with plans for an all-new trilogy that reimagines the spirit of the 1999 teen favorite for a new generation. Partnering once again with producer Andrew Lazar and co-writer Naya Elle James, Junger confirmed that a new feature film, titled 10 Things I Hate About Dating, is already in development.

The project is envisioned as the first installment in a thematic trilogy, with sequels titled 10 Things I Hate About Marriage and 10 Things I Hate About Kids. These stories explore the evolving stages of romantic relationships, expanding on the tone and themes that made the original film a cultural touchstone.

While no casting decisions have been finalized, Junger expressed a strong interest in working again with Julia Stiles, who portrayed the fiercely independent Kat Stratford in the original film. He credited Stiles' portrayal for inspiring a generation of young women, saying her character left a meaningful legacy. If the new project resonates with former cast members, he hopes some might return — either in cameos or more substantial roles.

Junger also paid tribute to Heath Ledger, who starred as Patrick Verona and passed away in 2008. He shared that he had once considered bringing Ledger back for a different continuation of the character. Though that plan was never realized, Junger said any future installment will include a heartfelt acknowledgment of Ledger's impact and legacy.

In addition to the upcoming film series, a stage adaptation of 10 Things I Hate About You is currently in the works for Broadway. The musical will feature music by pop artist Carly Rae Jepsen and composer Ethan Gruska. Lena Dunham and Jessica Huang will write the book, and Mike Bosner and Buena Vista Theatrical will lead the production.

With both a cinematic revival and a Broadway debut on the horizon, 10 Things I Hate About You is poised to reach audiences in new and meaningful ways, honoring its origins while exploring fresh stories about love in all its forms.
